July 2019 Construction Numbers
The City released its July 2019 Report on Construction Activity demonstrating a construction value of $33.817 million for permits issued in July 2019. The construction value attained in the month of July is higher that the values attained in the previous four years, and is above the past five year average for the construction value reached in the month of July.
The construction value attained in July 2019 is above the construction value attained in July 2018; while the number of permits issued has also increased in comparison to last year's figures. In comparison with July 2018 construction values, increases were seen in the Single Detached Dwellings (New), Institutional & Government, Industrial and Multiple Residential (New) Sectors, while a decrease was seen in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions), Duplex, Triplex, Fourplex (New) and Commercial Sectors of construction.
The largest increase occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. In July 2019, a total of thirty-nine building permits were issued for new single detached dwellings, with a total construction value of $13.426 million, compared with July 2018, when there was one building permit issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $0.407 million.
An increase also occurred in the Institutional & Government Sector of construction. In July 2019, a total of six building permits were issued in this Sector, with a construction value of $6.611 million, compared to July 2018, when there were three building permits issued having a total construction value of $0.301 million. The largest valued permit in this Sector was issued to the City of Brantford for the construction of a new fire station, located at 21 Fairview Drive, which had a construction value of $5.0 million.
The largest decrease occurred in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sector of construction. In July 2019, there were fifty-nine building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $1.457 million, compared with July 2018, when there were eighty-nine building permits issued, having a construction value of $2.191 million.
Other noteworthy building permits issued in July include a permit to construct a new apartment building located at 5 Marlene Avenue, which had a construction value of $4.60 million, and a permit issued to Vicano Developments Limited to construct a new warehouse at 185 Oak Park Road, which had a construction value of $2.00 million.
The year-to-date construction value of $114.200 million is above last year's total of $65.906 million. For the year, a total of 700 building permits have been issued, which is an increase from the 607 permits issued in 2018 over the same time period.
The 2019 construction year has continued to build off of the strong numbers attained in 2018. The construction value of permits issued have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2019.
