Brantford’s construction activity begins strong in 2020

The City released its January 2020 Report on Construction Activity demonstrating a construction value of $39.591 million for 149 issued permits. The construction value in January surpasses the value attained for the month of January in 2019 and is well above the past five-year average for the month of January.

The largest increase occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. A total of 101 building permits were issued for new single detached dwellings, with a total construction value of $31.059 million, compared to two building permits with a total construction value of $0.590 million in January 2019.

Increases also occurred in the Multiple Residential (New) Sector of construction. A total of three building permits were issued in this Sector, with a construction value of $4.821 million, which is an increase over no building permits in January 2019. The largest building permit in terms of construction value was issued to LIV Developments Ltd., for the construction of three 8-unit townhouse buildings located on Bilanski Farm Rd., which each had a construction value of $1.607 million.

Other noteworthy permits issued in January include a building permit to complete alterations to create a fast food restaurant, located at 20 Shellington Place, which had a construction value of $1.20 million, and a permit to install the foundation and site servicing for a new apartment located at 232 Grand River Ave., with a construction value of $0.800 million.

The year-to-date construction value of $39.591 million is more than double last year’s total of $15.524 million. A total of 149 building permits have been issued in 2020, which is substantial increase of 42 permits issued in 2019 over the same time period.
